Specialty & Scleral Lenses In Mount Clemens, MI
Contact lenses are not a one-size-fits-all. The shape of your eye, high amounts of astigmatism, and certain vision conditions can make a traditional fit challenging and may limit your ability to wear a standard soft lens. If you struggle with eye conditions that prevent you from seeing clearly with standard contacts or spectacle correction, fortunately there is a vast selection of specialty contacts available that can help.
Hard-To-Fit Vision Conditions.
Many eye conditions make it difficult to wear standard contact lenses. Some of the most typical reasons include:
- Keratoconus
- Corneal scarring
- Dry eye syndrome
- Pellucid Marginal Degeneration
- Post-LASIK, or other refractive procedure
- Presbyopia
- Astigmatism
Our doctors at LaCroix Eye Care are experienced in fitting complex vision conditions with these hard-to-fit contact lenses. We would be happy to evaluate your eyes and discuss if a specialty lens option is right for you
Our Specialty Contact Lens Options
Gas-Permeable Lenses
Rigid gas permeable contact lenses are a type of oxygen-permeable hard contact lens smaller in size than a traditional soft lens. These lenses are very breathable not only because they’re made of silicone material, but also because they cover less surface of the eye, allowing moisture and oxygen to circulate under the lens. Although not as popular as soft lenses, there are several advantages to GP lenses, including their durability, resistance to deposits, and superior vision quality for those with high prescriptions, high astigmatism, and irregular corneas.
Hybrid
A hybrid contact lens is a contact lens with a hard gas-permeable center and soft contact lens skirt. This provides the superior vision of a GP lens with comfort that resembles a soft lens. Hybrid lenses are typically indicated for both normal and irregular corneas with high amounts of astigmatism.
Scleral Contact Lenses
Scleral lenses are large gas permeable contact lenses that rest on the white part of the eye, called the sclera, and vault over the entire corneal surface. A chamber of saline fluid rests in between the surface of the eye and the smooth contact lens surface. This fluid reservoir helps minimize distortions, glare, haloes, and ghosting in patients where the corneal surface is highly irregular, which allows for exceptional vision and a comfortable wearing experience.
Anyone can wear scleral lenses however they are particularly useful for patients who cannot see clearly with traditional contacts and glasses because of the irregular nature of their cornea. These conditions include patients with keratoconus, corneal scarring, post-LASIK ectasia, post-RK ectasia, severe dry eye disease, and high amounts of astigmatism. These contact lenses are custom designed, medical devices that must be prescribed by an eye care practitioner and require a proper evaluation in order to be fit.
Ortho-K Lenses for Myopia Management
Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, is a revolutionary way to help you see clearly throughout the day without glasses or contacts. Ortho-k lenses are uniquely designed, gas permeable contact lenses custom made to fit each patient’s cornea. These lenses are worn only at night and gently reshape the front surface of the eye while you sleep. This process corrects your vision so that when the lenses are removed in the morning, you can see clearly without the need for daytime correction.
Orthokeratology is an FDA approved practice that is safe, effective, and entirely reversible. If at any time you wish to discontinue ortho-k, your eye will transition back to its original prescription once the contact lenses are no longer worn. Patients that are good candidates for ortho-k include: children requiring myopia management, athletes, particularly swimmers, and poor LASIK candidates who want the ability to wake up and see clearly without contacts.
Multifocal Lenses
Multifocal contact lenses have multiple prescriptions in one lens, functioning similarly to bifocal eyeglasses but with smoother transitions between prescriptions. They allow clear vision at various distances by seamlessly blending distance to near. These lenses are effective for treating presbyopia, a natural, age-related condition where we gradually lose our focusing ability. There are specialty multifocal lens options in both soft and hard varieties for patients who cannot achieve their visual goals with traditional multifocal contacts due to high amounts of astigmatism or unique vision demands
Scleral Lenses
Scleral Lenses
Scleral lenses possess a wide diameter that encompasses the full corneal surface, settling comfortably on the sclera — the white of the eye. They help reshape irregular corneas and maintain a steady fluid layer over the cornea, acting as a fluid reservoir. This unique feature of scleral lenses makes them exceptionally effective in handling conditions such as keratoconus, dry eye, and multiple types of corneal ectasia.
Gas-Permeable (GP) Lenses
Gas-Permeable (GP) Lenses
Gas Permeable (GP) lenses are designed to be breathable, which increases oxygen flow to the eyes. Comprised of silicone, these custom lenses are rigid, enhancing clarity and durability. They are particularly effective in helping patients with dry eye syndrome.
Silicone Hydrogel Lenses
Silicone Hydrogel Lenses
Silicone hydrogel lenses are a type of breathable soft contact lens that are widely used to correct vision and treat various eye conditions including myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. They are made from advanced silicone-based materials that allow for higher oxygen permeability, which helps keep the eyes healthy and comfortable. This makes them highly effective at reducing the risk of eye problems such as dryness and irritation.
Lenses for Dry Eye
Dailies Total1® for Dry Eye
Dailies Total1® are special daily disposable lenses that keep nearly 100% water held against the eye’s surface — this layer of water padding makes these lenses extremely comfortable to wear and excellent at treating dry eye disease.
Ortho-K Lenses
Ortho-K Lenses for Myopia Management
Ortho-K lenses, also known as “visual braces,” are specialized rigid contact lenses designed to reshape the eye. Suitable for both children and adults, these lenses are particularly effective in managing conditions such as myopia, caused by irregular eye shapes. Wearing Ortho-K lenses overnight works wonders because it enables the individual to experience clear and corrected vision throughout the day, eliminating the need for regular glasses or contact lenses.
Multifocal Lenses
Multifocal Lenses
Multifocal contact lenses have multiple prescriptions in one lens, functioning similarly to bifocal eyeglasses but with smoother transitions between prescriptions. Unlike bifocal contacts, they allow clear vision at various distances without distinct separation between close and medium viewing areas. These lenses are especially effective for treating presbyopia, a common age-related condition prevalent in individuals aged 40 and above.
Color Contact Lenses
Color Contact Lenses
There are two types of color contacts available: plano and prescription. The former lens type is strictly for changing your eye color without vision correction, and the latter can correct vision, too!
